Associate Vice-Chancellor, Director of Physical Planning & Campus Architect

Associate Vice-Chancellor (1986-1989); Director of Physical Planning (1981-1986)

Senior management position responsible for all areas of capital planning, real estate development, facility programming, architectural/engineering policies and guidelines, project management, contract administration, and construction administration. Initiated new activities for the entire UC System, including first public/private ground lease-based projects and first major faculty/staff housing non-profit corporation.

Campus Architect (1977-1989)

Senior administrative position that initiated major policy changes associated with the urban  design character of both the Irvine campus and the Orange medical center; rewrote the campus and medical center long range development plans; and collaborated with renowned design professionals in the internationally-recognized expansion of the academic campus and its related research, commercial and residential land use components.

Long Range Planning
Led the development and wrote the 1989 Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) to double the student population and square footage of the existing campus. Successfully managed both community outreach and environmental (CEQA) compliance issues.

Project Management
Oversaw the planning, design, and construction of over $1B in capital projects at both main campus and medical center locations. Directed projects with renowned design professionals resulting in award-winning plans and projects, many featured in leading international architectural and landscape publications.

Public/Private Real Estate Ventures
Created and directed the first campus-based real estate program within the UC system, which developed innovative  leasehold projects and strategic partnerships with public and private  organizations (P3), including biomedical buildings, performing arts and athletic facilities, faculty/staff housing, and administrative/support  buildings.
