UVA’s Ruth Caplin Theatre receives 2018 SCUP Excellence Award

We are very honored that University of Virginia’s Ruth Caplin Theatre is a 2018 SCUP Design Excellence Award recipient! The award is intended to showcase how strategic and integrated planning results in campus environments that support learning, engagement, community, and sustainability to further institutional success.

The Ruth Caplin Theatre, completed in 2013, features a 300-seat multi-use theater designed to heighten “thrust” experience (with audience surrounding the stage on three sides). The building is fully integrated into an adjacent landscaped hillside; merges and expands the existing lobby for the black-box and main proscenium theaters; and is capped by a vegetated roof terrace, which is central to the UVA Arts Precinct.

Since the theater and expanded lobby facilities opened, UVA’s Drama program has grown significantly in regards to its offerings, attendance and community engagement.

The theater was designed by William Rawn Associates, in collaboration with OLIN landscape architects  and David J. Neuman, FAIA, during his tenure as Architect for the University of Virginia.
