The UVA Hospital Expansion, designed by Ralph Johnson, FAIA of Perkins and Will, in collaboration with David J. Neuman, FAIA during his tenure as Architect for the University of Virginia was opened ahead of schedule in April 2020 in order to accommodate some of the first COVID patients in Virginia. This expansion is a great example of sustainable design and infrastructure flexibility put to actual use in the face of the pandemic. It also incorporates a state-of-the-art emergency department which separates pediatric patients from adult patients, as well as direct elevator access to three rooftop helipads at this quaternary care regional health care center.
